Vocal Image, an innovative startup based in Estonia, is making waves with its AI-driven app designed to enhance voice and communication skills. With an impressive 4 million downloads and 160,000 active users, the company is spearheaded by CEO Nick Lakhoika, whose personal journey of overcoming speaking anxiety adds a unique dimension to its mission. Originally from Belarus, Lakhoika moved to Estonia without knowing English and faced challenges with speech, including bullying in school due to his unclear diction. His transformative experience began when he sought help from vocal coach Maryna "Rusia" Shukiurava, who taught him that voice and communication can be developed through practice. This revelation inspired the duo to create a YouTube channel that eventually evolved into Vocal Image, providing an accessible alternative to traditional one-on-one coaching through a subscription-based app. The app features a diverse range of interactive resources, such as tongue twisters, breathing exercises, and advice on body language, while also integrating AI to offer automated feedback and personalized coaching tips. These guided sessions are particularly geared towards work-related objectives, including improving leadership skills, public speaking, and presentation techniques. Moreover, Vocal Image is committed to fostering self-confidence among users, including support for LGBTQ individuals, a cause close to Shukiurava's heart. After fleeing Belarus amidst political unrest and repression, Lakhoika chose Estonia for its conducive business climate. The startup thrived after joining the local accelerator Startup Wise Guys, which recognized Vocal Image as a prominent success story. With less than $1 million in pre-seed funding, the company has impressively scaled to $6.5 million in annual recurring revenue (ARR) and recently raised $3.6 million in a seed round led by French edtech venture capital firm Educapital. As of August, Vocal Image has reported an ARR of $12 million and approximately 50,000 paid subscribers. The company, now employing a team of 20, primarily comprised of Belarusian exiles, is set to expand its development team and introduce more language localizations, including Spanish, German, French, Ukrainian, and Russian. This latest funding comes on the heels of Vocal Image being honored as one of the five winners in the European AI Startup Program by Hugging Face, Meta, and Scaleway, amidst rising competition. Notably, competitors like Headway have recently incorporated AI speech trainers into their offerings. However, Vocal Image maintains a robust advantage with its GDPR-compliant AI dataset, boasting over 1 million real-voice samples collected through 35,000 daily recordings. This unique community-driven feature, known as Voice Rating, allows users to classify recordings based on confidence levels, providing essential data that can enhance AI accuracy and expand the startup's capabilities beyond its B2C foundations.
