Vitalik Buterin has reservations about Sam Altman’s World project

Vitalik Buterin, co-founder of Ethereum, has expressed serious concerns regarding the privacy implications of the digital identity model proposed by Sam Altman’s World project, formerly known as Worldcoin. Created by Altman and Alex Blania under the organization Tools for Humanity, this initiative aims to differentiate between AI agents and humans by scanning users’ irises to generate unique blockchain identities. In a detailed post, Buterin pointed out that the use of zero-knowledge proofs for verifying human identity while maintaining anonymity is a concept also being examined by various digital ID and passport projects. He acknowledged that, at first glance, employing a 'ZK-wrapped digital ID' could enhance the protection of social media, voting, and other online services from manipulation by bots and fraudulent accounts, all while safeguarding user privacy. However, Buterin cautioned that this model effectively leads to a 'one-per-person' identification system, which he believes carries inherent risks. He argued, "In the real world, pseudonymity generally requires having multiple accounts. Under a one-per-person ID, even if it is ZK-wrapped, we risk edging closer to a reality where all of our online activities are tied to a single public identity." He noted significant downsides to this approach, particularly in an environment where threats are increasing. For instance, Buterin highlighted that the U.S. government has begun mandating that applicants for student and scholar visas make their social media accounts public for scrutiny, raising concerns about the potential for invasive monitoring. He further warned that even if there were no visible connections between different accounts under a unified digital identity, a government could compel individuals to disclose their private information to access their full online activities. Buterin advocates for a 'pluralistic identity' approach, where no single authority—be it an individual or institution—holds supremacy over identity verification. He outlines that pluralistic systems could be either explicit, requiring users to validate their identity through testimonials from verified individuals, or implicit, utilizing a mix of different identity frameworks. He believes these models present the most viable solution to the privacy dilemma. In his closing remarks, Buterin suggested that the optimal result for current 'one-per-person' identity initiatives would be to integrate them with social-graph-based identity systems, combining the strengths of both to foster a safer online environment.
