Visa, the leading global payments giant, has reported an astounding expenditure of 1.9 trillion AI tokens each month as of March, a significant increase from the previous month's figures. This surge is part of the company's internal initiative known as 'Tokenmaxxing,' which encourages employees to showcase their AI token utilization. The company's focus is not solely on the volume of tokens used but on achieving tangible results. Visa is now incentivizing teams that demonstrate how they leverage AI technology to enhance productivity. Rajat Taneja, Visa's president of technology, emphasized that the emphasis lies on the 'volume of impact' rather than just output. This trend signifies a broader movement among corporations to integrate AI into their operations. Notable companies like JPMorgan and IKEA are also tracking AI usage and implementing innovative tools to assist staff. At Visa, the software engineering department leads in token consumption, but AI's influence is expanding across various sectors, including marketing, where a recent campaign showcased skiers on the sun-drenched streets of the Amalfi Coast. Teams at Visa that effectively utilize AI are recognized for their achievements. For instance, one team successfully implemented a new API in under six days using the ClaudeSonnet model and received accolades for their efforts. Employees can choose rewards such as internal 'points' redeemable for items like coffee makers. With 89% of Visa's workforce actively using AI tools and 44% classified as 'power users'—averaging at least 25 prompts daily for over half the month—the company is clearly embracing this technological shift. While the trillion-token mark is impressive for a non-Silicon Valley entity, it's becoming a standard benchmark in the AI sector; for example, Meta employees reportedly consumed 60 trillion tokens in a month. Taneja remarked that this monumental shift represents a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity in technology, underscoring the need for industries beyond tech to take note of these advancements.
