On Thursday, Visa announced significant progress in its AI shopping pilot program, boasting hundreds of successful transactions since its launch following the company's product showcase in April. The financial giant, alongside its competitors in the fintech sector, is on a mission to develop innovative tools that enable consumers to utilize artificial intelligence for various transaction tasks. Rubail Birwadker, Visa's head of growth products and partnerships, expressed optimism for the future, stating, "This will be the year of widespread adoption, as consumers become increasingly comfortable navigating diverse AI-driven environments." The integration of AI is set to enhance the online shopping experience, fundamentally altering how customers browse and purchase products. In April, Mastercard initiated trials for a feature called Agent Pay, which empowers AI agents to shop on behalf of users. Around the same time, Amazon began exploring a similar service named "Buy For Me," and collaborations between PayPal and Perplexity have emerged to develop agent-centric shopping tools. A recent survey revealed that nearly 50% of U.S. shoppers are already utilizing AI in their purchasing decisions. While the data is still emerging, Birwadker noted that these tools could be particularly beneficial for routine purchases or high-demand events like concert tickets. Looking ahead, Visa plans to introduce pilot programs in Asia and Europe next year, working alongside more than 20 partners to expand its AI agent offerings.
