Visakhapatnam to ‘AI-Patnam’: Google’s $15 billion blueprint for India’s AI hub

The coastal city of Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, is set to undergo a remarkable transformation as Google embarks on a groundbreaking venture to establish India’s first artificial intelligence (AI) hub. On April 28, Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu and Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw officiated the foundation laying for a 1-gigawatt (GW) AI data center, marking Google's largest foreign direct investment (FDI) of $15 billion. This initiative positions Vizag as a burgeoning center for AI infrastructure and cloud computing, coining it the nickname "AI-Patnam"—a term introduced by Vaishnaw, drawing parallels to Hyderabad’s IT corridor, "Cybrabad." The implications of this investment are significant for the Indian tech landscape. From enhancing hyperscale infrastructure and cloud computing capabilities to generating employment opportunities and bolstering the semiconductor industry, the emergence of "AI-Patnam" signals a pivotal moment for India’s digital future. This ambitious project could redefine the nation's role within the global AI supply chain. The infrastructure for this AI hub will be developed in collaboration with key partners including Adani ConneX and Bharti Airtel, which are tasked with establishing foundational data center capabilities and improving connectivity. Gopal Vittal, Executive Vice Chairman at Bharti Airtel, shared insights with Business Today, revealing plans to create a dedicated data center alongside a state-of-the-art Cable Landing Station (CLS) that will utilize Google’s international subsea cables. He emphasized that this infrastructure is critical, stating, "Our full stack of best-in-class data centers, use of green power, pan-India ultra-low latency fibre, and a next-gen cable landing station will enable large-scale, world-class AI infrastructure in Vizag." Moreover, Airtel plans to develop a robust intra-city and inter-city fiber network, enhancing the digital framework to provide quicker services for Google’s clientele while promoting digital inclusivity across India. Vittal further highlighted the commitment to sustainability, affirming that India aims to lead in innovation and sustainable practices, benefiting not just the nation but the global community. However, the establishment of "AI-Patnam" is expected to extend its impact beyond the IT sector. Industries such as healthcare, education, and manufacturing stand to gain from reduced entry barriers and improved latency, allowing for swift deployment of AI solutions. Amit Sarin, Managing Director of Anant Raj Ltd, noted that this infrastructure will create a demand for roles beyond software engineering, including data center operations, network engineering, cybersecurity, and green energy, while also generating opportunities in logistics and local services. The local economy in Andhra Pradesh is poised for growth through increased investment and skill development in the Vizag area. Despite the excitement surrounding this initiative, challenges remain. Vaishnaw identified critical issues during the foundation ceremony, including local server production, energy efficiency, and water sustainability. Sarin stressed the need for robust frameworks addressing data protection, AI ethics, and infrastructure resilience to cultivate trust and ensure sustainability. Additionally, Nara Lokesh mentioned ongoing efforts to develop policies for data privacy in collaboration with Vaishnaw. The momentum in Visakhapatnam is already drawing further investments. Following Google’s commitment, Reliance is reportedly set to invest over $17 billion in the city to establish its own AI data center. Anant Raj Ltd has also announced a significant investment of Rs 4,500 crore aimed at enhancing digital infrastructure to support the Google AI hub. These escalating investments could potentially set a new standard for digital inclusion and economic advancement in Andhra Pradesh and across India.
