In a landmark development, the foundation for Google's ambitious $15 billion AI data center in Visakhapatnam was officially laid today. This significant event was witnessed by prominent leaders from both the Union and state governments, alongside key partners such as Adani Group and Bharti Airtel. During the ceremony, Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw expressed his vision for the state, suggesting that Visakhapatnam aims to emerge as 'AI-Patnam,' a nod to Hyderabad's established identity as 'Cyberabad.' Vaishnaw emphasized India's newfound position in the global AI landscape, stating that the country is prepared to take the lead in sectors like AI, semiconductors, and space technology. He remarked, "In the past, we missed several technological cycles, but now we must seize every opportunity to lead in innovation." He also acknowledged the pivotal role played by Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu in developing Hyderabad's technological infrastructure and highlighted the shift towards AI development in Vizag. "Visakhapatnam is set to be reborn as AI-Patnam, similar to how Cyberabad emerged as a tech hub," he noted. In addition to the AI center, Google plans to establish a significant subsea cable network in the region. Vaishnaw revealed that three major subsea cables would be installed, creating essential digital links: one connecting India to Australia and the U.S. West Coast, another linking India with the Middle East, Europe, and the U.S., and a third extending from the African coast to the U.S. Despite global uncertainties affecting other regions, India is being positioned as a reliable and secure center for data management and AI systems, ensuring that operations can continue without disruption. While the project is a monumental step forward, Vaishnaw outlined a three-pronged challenge for Google and its partners. This includes commitments to local server manufacturing, enhancing power efficiency, and ensuring water sustainability, all aimed at fostering long-term success and aligning with India's manufacturing aspirations.
