Visa invests in Replit to power agentic payments for developers

Visa has made a strategic investment in the AI coding platform Replit, although the exact amount remains undisclosed. This collaboration aims to incorporate Visa’s payment solutions into Replit, enabling developers and their AI creations to process payments directly from customers without needing to exit the platform. The partnership is particularly significant, considering that over 1,000 Visa employees are already leveraging Replit for their prototyping and development needs. Together, the companies are investigating how Replit developers can utilize Visa's AI-driven payment solutions, including Visa Intelligent Commerce, and the Trusted Agent Protocol. This protocol is designed to ensure that AI agents can securely authenticate themselves by providing essential information, allowing for reliable verification of payments made through these agents. Currently, these initiatives are in the exploratory phase, and no formal products have been announced yet. However, this investment highlights a growing competition to create a framework for agentic payments, where AI agents conduct transactions on behalf of users. Other tech giants, such as Robinhood and Google, are also rapidly advancing in this arena, aiming to empower users to harness agents for trading and shopping, respectively. Amjad Masad, CEO and founder of Replit, commented on the investment, stating that the increasing traction in the enterprise sector aligns with their goal of making coding accessible and secure for everyone. In addition, Replit is launching a self-serve enterprise access model, enabling companies to enter contracts worth up to $200,000 without the need for direct salesperson interaction. This tier includes enterprise-level compliance features, such as Single Sign-On (SSO), audit logs, and advanced permission settings. As the demand for innovative coding platforms surges, valuations for startups like Replit and others in the space have skyrocketed. Replit achieved a valuation of $3 billion last September, and just six months later, it raised $400 million in Series D funding, reaching a staggering $9 billion. During a recent TechCrunch event, Masad revealed that Replit experiences low customer churn rates, with some cases showing a net retention of 300%. He noted that once enterprises grow accustomed to the full capabilities of Replit, especially within a secure environment, they are likely to retain their applications on the platform rather than attempt to migrate them elsewhere.
