Suspect in Molotov attack on Sam Altman's home linked to AI Discord server

A 20-year-old man has been apprehended following a Molotov cocktail attack on the multimillion-dollar home of Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI. The suspect, identified as Daniel Alejandro Moreno-Gama, was an active participant in a Discord server known for its critical stance on artificial intelligence advancements. The group, named PauseAI, advocates for a temporary halt on the development of advanced AI models, such as OpenAI's latest GPT-5.4, due to the potential risks they pose. In a statement, PauseAI clarified that although Moreno-Gama had joined their server two years ago and posted 34 messages, none contained explicit calls for violence. They emphasized that he had no official affiliation with the organization and was banned from the server following the attack. According to the San Francisco Police Department, authorities received a call regarding a fire at a North Beach residence shortly after 4 a.m. local time. The flames were confined to the exterior gate, fortunately causing no injuries. Following the incident, the suspect fled on foot, prompting a swift police response. Just over an hour later, officers were dispatched to OpenAI's headquarters, where Moreno-Gama was reportedly making threats to set the building ablaze. OpenAI confirmed the attack, stating, "Early this morning, someone threw a Molotov cocktail at Sam Altman's home and also made threats at our San Francisco headquarters. Thankfully, no one was hurt. We deeply appreciate how quickly SFPD responded and the support from the city in helping keep our employees safe." In a blog post addressing the incident, Altman expressed understanding towards those with anti-technology views, emphasizing the need for a constructive dialogue about technological progress. He called for a reduction in hostile rhetoric and actions surrounding the debate on technology. This incident marks a concerning trend for OpenAI, following a previous security scare where employees were instructed to shelter in place due to a threat from an anti-AI activist.
