Vijay Pande, a prominent general partner at Andreessen Horowitz, has announced his departure from his position leading the a16z Bio + Health strategy. Since its inception in 2014, this division has successfully raised nearly $3 billion across four funds, including a notable $1.5 billion fund that closed last year. Currently, a16z Bio + Health is in pursuit of a smaller fifth fund, targeting $750 million, as reported by The Wall Street Journal. Additionally, in January, the firm unveiled plans for a $500 million biotech fund, with backing from pharmaceutical powerhouse Eli Lilly. The a16z Bio + Health team focuses on investing in digital health startups and ventures that merge artificial intelligence, computation, and biology. Among Pande's significant investments are Devoted Health, which offers personalized medical plans; Function Health, a startup specializing in tailored lab testing; and Freenome, an innovative company working on cancer detection through blood tests. Before his pivotal role at Andreessen Horowitz, Pande was a distinguished professor at Stanford University, where he taught chemistry, structural biology, and computer science. He leaves behind a capable team, including partners Jorge Conde, Julie Yoo, and Vineeta Agarwala, who will continue to lead the division.
