Artificial intelligence is reshaping not only technology but also the English language itself. The term "vibe-coding," introduced by Andrej Karpathy, a co-founder of OpenAI and former AI director at Tesla, has officially made its way into the dictionary. Karpathy first shared this concept via a post on X back in February, and just nine months later, it has been recognized as a legitimate term. In his original post, Karpathy described vibe-coding as a revolutionary approach where programmers fully immerse themselves in the creative process, allowing AI to handle the complexities of coding. He noted, "There's a new kind of coding I call 'vibe coding' where you fully give in to the vibes, embrace exponentials, and forget that the code even exists." This method has gained traction as large language models (LLMs) like Cursor Composer and Sonnet have become increasingly sophisticated. Now officially labeled as Collins Dictionary's 2025 Word of the Year, vibe-coding is classified as a noun and slang, defined as "the use of artificial intelligence prompted by natural language to assist with the writing of computer code." This new coding paradigm has swiftly become popular among both seasoned developers and newcomers, facilitating the process of building applications and experimenting with innovative ideas in various companies. Moreover, the rise of vibe-coding platforms has attracted significant investment from top Silicon Valley financiers. For instance, Lovable, a startup established in 2023, secured a remarkable $200 million in Series A funding, attaining a valuation of $1.8 billion, led by Accel. Similarly, Replit announced a $250 million funding round with a $3 billion valuation orchestrated by Prysm Capital, while Vercel revealed a $300 million round, achieving a valuation of $9.3 billion, also led by Accel. This surge in funding highlights the growing importance and acceptance of vibe-coding in the tech industry.
