Verizon makes customers wait 35 days to unlock fully paid-off phones

Verizon has recently implemented a new policy that adds a significant delay for customers looking to unlock their fully paid-off phones. Under the updated guidelines, postpaid customers are now required to wait 35 days after paying off their device installment plans online or through the Verizon app before they can unlock their devices. This new rule also applies to payments made over the phone or at Verizon Authorized Retailers. If customers wish to avoid this waiting period, they must pay off their device plans directly at a Verizon corporate store. Unlocking a phone is essential for customers who want the flexibility to switch carriers, as it allows devices to be used on different networks. Previously, the 35-day delay was only enforced when customers utilized a Verizon gift card to pay off their plans. The policy now states, "If you payoff a device payment agreement balance online or in the My Verizon App, or if a Verizon Gift Card is used to purchase a smartphone or pay off a remaining balance, the unlocking process will be delayed by 35 days." This change aims to verify the legitimacy of funds when gift cards are used, yet it has now been extended to other payment methods as well. The alteration in policy, which was noted by a member of the Ars forum, reflects a significant shift in Verizon's approach to device unlocking. Despite the changes being implemented recently, the company continues to reference January 27 as the effective date for its unlocking policy, leading to questions about the transparency of these updates and whether they are being applied retroactively.
