Developer of VeraCrypt encryption software says Windows users may face boot-up issues after Microsoft locked his account

The creator of the widely-used encryption software VeraCrypt has reported that Microsoft has locked his developer account, which he utilized to distribute important updates to Windows users. Mounir Idrassi, the developer based in Japan, expressed his concerns in a post on March 30, indicating that this action could lead to significant boot-up problems for users who rely on his software for encryption. Idrassi stated that Microsoft terminated the account he has relied on for years to sign Windows drivers and the bootloader, without providing any justification or options for appeal. Despite his attempts to contact Microsoft, he reported difficulties in reaching a representative. The developer emphasized that since Microsoft mandates re-validation of developer accounts for software security, many VeraCrypt users might face boot issues if the situation remains unresolved. VeraCrypt is an open-source encryption tool that allows users to secure files and even their entire operating system from unauthorized access. The latest version of the software, released in May 2025, has seen nearly a million downloads, showcasing its popularity. However, this incident underscores the significant control that tech companies exercise over the applications available on their platforms, as well as the risks associated with users depending on third-party accounts that can be revoked. Currently, Idrassi can still push updates to Linux and macOS users without issue, but the majority of his Windows user base is left without updates. He reassured affected users that VeraCrypt would continue to function normally for the time being and no immediate security risks have been identified. However, he warned that those who have activated system encryption may encounter boot issues within a few months, potentially as soon as late June. Microsoft is expected to revoke the certificate authority that allows his software to be digitally signed, a crucial step in safeguarding against software tampering. Without access to his account for necessary updates, Idrassi noted, it would be impossible for him to apply the required new signature to VeraCrypt, which could prevent users from booting their computers. "If this issue isn’t resolved, it could effectively spell the end for VeraCrypt," he emphasized. This incident is not isolated; earlier in the year, another developer faced a similar situation when they were locked out of their Apple account after using what they suspected was a fraudulent gift card. They were ultimately able to regain access after their story gained public attention.
