3 VCs behind Affirm, DoorDash, and Zoom say the next wave of billion-dollar companies won't be in San Francisco

A trio of seasoned venture capitalists, renowned for their early investments in transformative tech firms, are embarking on a new journey to discover the next wave of billion-dollar companies outside of San Francisco. This group, previously associated with Singapore's massive sovereign wealth fund GIC, is looking to recreate their success with early bets on companies like DoorDash, Zoom, and Coinbase. Ethel Chen, one of the partners involved, expressed that the dynamics of venture capital are evolving. "Great venture teams are like great bands; you recognize the right chemistry," Chen noted, emphasizing their experience in identifying promising founders who are innovating at the intersection of artificial intelligence, infrastructure, and global commerce. Leading this initiative is Jeremy Kranz, who founded Sentinel Global in 2022 with an initial fund of $213 million. Alongside former GIC colleagues Chen and Karan Sharma, who have a track record of investing in high-profile companies like Anduril and SpaceX, the firm is intentionally structured to be small and highly efficient, prioritizing research and engineering over a large junior investing team. "We are a SWAT team model," Kranz explained, referencing his past roles as an early investor at DoorDash and Affirm. While Kranz acknowledges his extensive background at GIC, he believes that the landscape has changed drastically due to advancements in AI. He pointed out that these innovations allow startups to operate more efficiently, leading to a proliferation of companies valued at $1 billion that require significantly less initial funding than before. "AI is a game-changer, impacting how we build businesses," he stated. Sentinel's investment strategy encompasses enterprise AI, programmable money, and what Kranz terms "connected commerce," which focuses on integrating physical products with software and AI solutions. Despite being rooted in the Bay Area, Kranz insists that venture capital has become overly concentrated geographically, and Sentinel is keen on identifying scrappy startups in diverse locations. Kranz believes that the traditional Silicon Valley advantages are diminishing due to the rapid evolution of AI tools, which he predicts will streamline operations and reduce costs for startups in unexpected ways. "You don’t need to raise exorbitant amounts of money to establish an AI company, nor do you need a vast talent pool," he remarked. This shift in thinking is particularly beneficial for founders in regions where operational efficiency is prioritized. "Emerging markets show a level of shrewdness that Silicon Valley currently lacks," Kranz assessed. He intends to focus on fewer investments each year, typically ranging from $5 million to $30 million, while emphasizing the importance of maintaining substantial ownership stakes in these ventures, a lesson he learned from veteran investor Michael Moritz. In summary, the alignment of these experienced VCs signals a potential shift in the startup landscape, one that could redefine where and how the next generation of tech titans emerges.
