Chamath Palihapitiya warns PwC and Accenture against working with OpenAI and Anthropic: 'You are letting the fox into the henhouse'

Chamath Palihapitiya, a prominent venture capitalist, has raised concerns regarding the alliances that leading consulting firms like PwC and Accenture are forging with AI companies such as OpenAI and Anthropic. He cautioned that these firms may soon regret their decisions, likening the situation to allowing a predator into a vulnerable environment. In a post on X, Palihapitiya stated, "If you are running a consulting business and you are deploying Anthropic or OpenAI directly into your organization, you are letting the fox into the henhouse." He emphasized that these AI firms are not only competitors but are actively working to undermine the very businesses that partner with them. His comments came shortly after OpenAI unveiled its latest initiative, the OpenAI Deployment Company, aimed at assisting organizations in building and implementing AI systems. This new venture has McKinsey & Company as an investor, further complicating the landscape for traditional consulting firms. Palihapitiya's assertion highlights a critical point: while consulting firms are integrating these advanced AI technologies, they may inadvertently be empowering their competitors. He remarked, "OpenAI and Anthropic are openly funding and starting competitors to you while also using your usage to drive more success for them. This isn’t their failure; it’s yours." Both PwC and Accenture have previously announced extensive partnerships with these AI entities. Recently, they expanded their collaborations, with PwC and Anthropic launching a joint Center of Excellence to train a significant number of PwC professionals on the Claude AI model. Meanwhile, Accenture has been working with OpenAI to assist federal agencies in adopting AI technologies. Palihapitiya discussed these developments further during a recent episode of the "All In Podcast," pointing out that the lower end of the Software as a Service (SaaS) market is rapidly becoming obsolete due to the rise of generative AI. He noted that competition is now intensifying among larger firms, revealing the complexities of AI integration. "This is a lot harder than we thought," he emphasized, warning that consulting firms should be cautious of short-term partnerships that might ultimately benefit their adversaries.
