Chi-Hua Chien saw Facebook coming; now he says the real AI winners won’t be selling AI

Chi-Hua Chien, a seasoned venture capitalist with over 20 years in the field, combines his investment savvy with insights akin to a cultural anthropologist. As the co-founder of Goodwater Capital, which concentrates on consumer and prosumer technology, his portfolio includes notable companies in entertainment, healthcare, fintech, and live experiences, including MIDI Health, Fever, and Monzo. Chien's sharp understanding of human behavior was evident early in his career when, at just 27 years old, he discovered a fledgling startup from Harvard named Facebook. Chien's perspectives extend to the evolving landscape of artificial intelligence (AI). He posits that the gap between advanced AI models and those operable on personal devices, once estimated at two years, could shrink to just three months within the next year. He is vocal about a trend many venture capitalists are only beginning to acknowledge: the commoditization of AI model layers is already occurring, and the true beneficiaries of this AI revolution won't necessarily be the companies directly selling AI technologies. In a recent interview, Chien discussed the changing dynamics within venture capital, noting a rise in public grievances from founders and investors alike. This shift, he argues, reflects a broader cultural phenomenon where political tensions spill over into business. Venture firms have grown increasingly vertically integrated, allowing the largest firms to operate with substantial capital reserves, reducing their reliance on syndicate partners and changing the traditional decorum of maintaining relationships with co-investors. Chien also pointed to the trend of 'fast follow' funding rounds, where significant investments are made at one valuation, followed by smaller investments shortly thereafter at inflated valuations. He believes this practice has been prevalent for some time, driven by an aggressive marketing strategy to showcase market leadership and attract talent. The discussion turned to the potential for infrastructure companies to become commoditized, a pattern Chien believes is evident in past technological cycles. He highlighted that while infrastructure companies peaked in value in 2000, application companies have consistently outperformed in terms of market capitalization. For instance, during the web era, infrastructure created $400 billion in new market cap, while applications soared to $3.1 trillion, accounting for 88% of new value. Chien pointed out that Google’s recent reduction in subscription pricing for its AI product signifies the onset of price competition in the AI sector. This shift suggests that firms with advantages in vertical integration can leverage their position to offer better pricing to consumers. A central theme in Chien's perspective is hyper-personalization, which he identifies as a crucial differentiator for future winners in the market. Companies in his portfolio, such as Triumph and Flow GPT, are innovating in ways that enhance customer experience, transforming AI from a mere technology into a vehicle for personalized entertainment. Chien also shared insights into the impact of AI on healthcare, specifically through MIDI Health, which leverages technology to enhance care access for women, particularly in hormone replacement therapy. This model of using AI to expand healthcare access could revolutionize supply-constrained markets across various sectors. Looking ahead, Chien believes the timeline for achieving truly personal and ambient AI experiences is shorter than many anticipate. The advancements in AI capabilities are allowing local devices to run models that were previously cloud-dependent, with the gap closing rapidly. As for the challenge of integrating financial services with social platforms, Chien notes that the Western consumer’s trust in these domains remains fragile. The inherent differences in consumer expectations between entertainment and finance create significant barriers for companies attempting to merge these functionalities. Reflecting on societal trends, Chien expressed optimism about a renewed desire for in-person connections amid the digital overload. He highlighted investments in companies like Bump and Fever, which facilitate real-world interactions enriched by digital insights, suggesting a shift back towards valuing genuine human experiences. These insights encapsulate Chien's belief that AI's role as an enabler of personalized, relevant experiences is just beginning, and the future landscape will be shaped by those who understand and leverage this potential.
