On Monday, Venmo announced the launch of its latest initiative, Venmo Stash, a rewards program designed to provide cashback to users who transact with their preferred brands through the app. Unlike traditional credit card rewards, Venmo's cashback, which can reach up to 5%, is credited to the Venmo Mastercard Debit Card. This program aims to encourage users to remain engaged with Venmo's services and to enhance the flow of funds within its ecosystem. It also reflects a strategic move by brands to connect with younger consumers, who are increasingly opting for debit cards over credit cards. A 2024 study highlighted by eMarketer revealed that only 39% of Gen Z users frequently use credit cards, a stark contrast to the 51% usage rate among older generations. Additionally, a survey from Morning Consult noted that a significant 63% of Gen Z respondents preferred debit cards over other payment options. In response, payment providers and retailers are adapting by introducing more debit card rewards and offering flexible payment solutions such as “buy now, pay later” services. Venmo’s rewards program is structured to incentivize greater interaction with its products. Customers can initially earn 1% cashback for spending their Venmo balance. This increases to 2% when they activate auto-reloads to ensure their balance is automatically replenished. Furthermore, users can achieve a rewarding 5% cashback when they receive Direct Deposits through Venmo each month. Instead of categorizing rewards by specific spending types like groceries or gas, Venmo Stash allows users to select from curated bundles that feature their favorite brands. For example, users might choose a bundle that includes popular names like McDonald's, TikTok Shop, Uber, and Uber Eats, or another that offers options such as Amazon, DoorDash, Domino's, and Walgreens. Looking ahead to next year, Venmo plans to expand the Stash program, enabling users to earn rewards with Venmo payments at select merchants across the country, further solidifying its presence in the competitive rewards landscape.
