Venmo is set to launch a substantial redesign in the coming months, marking its most significant update since 2021. This overhaul aims to enhance the app's utility, social interaction, and user experience, coinciding with PayPal's strategic decision to spin off Venmo into an independent business unit, potentially paving the way for a sale. The redesign rollout kicks off this week, with additional features expected to be implemented over the next few months. By fall, the complete redesign should be accessible to all users. One of the most noticeable changes will be the updated feed, which has transitioned from a simple list of transactions to a more dynamic layout. Users can anticipate larger visuals and a broader array of responses to transactions, including reactions and quick action buttons like 'Pay Again' and 'Say Thanks.' Furthermore, the feed will be personalized, presenting tailored cashback offers and product recommendations based on users' shopping habits. Another exciting feature is the introduction of a 'Give a Shoutout' button, enabling users to endorse their favorite local businesses directly within the app. As Alexis Sowa, Venmo’s senior vice president and general manager, shared with TechCrunch, the redesign is particularly aimed at engaging Gen Z and younger audiences, who express a strong desire to support local merchants. This new functionality will allow users to provide a form of 'social proof' by endorsing businesses they frequent. In addition to these updates, Venmo will introduce two new tabs: 'Send' and 'Money.' The 'Send' tab will prominently display frequent contacts, simplifying the process of initiating transactions, while also making the bill-splitting 'Groups' feature more accessible for sharing expenses among multiple users. The 'Money' tab will serve as a hub for managing expenses, including access to Teen Accounts and cryptocurrency features. Additionally, a new 'Rewards' tab will consolidate limited-time offers and house Venmo’s Stash program, which provides users with up to 5% cashback on purchases at their favorite brands. Sowa emphasized that this redesign stems from extensive user research, revealing that many customers were unaware of existing features within the app. The update aligns with a broader trend among younger users who are increasingly seeking social interaction within their payment applications. Competing apps like Verse and Daylight already offer functionalities that allow users to track friends' spending habits, while European fintech app Revolut includes group bill splitting and in-app messaging. Venmo is clearly responding to the demand for a more social and engaging financial experience, particularly as it prepares for its potential transition to new ownership.
