A commercial space station startup now has a foothold in space

In a significant stride for commercial space exploration, Vast's privately-owned space station successfully launched its pathfinder mission, Haven Demo, into orbit on Sunday. The mission, which took off just after midnight from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida, marks a pivotal moment for the company as it begins a critical validation phase for its designs in the realm of spaceflight. The Haven Demo mission was part of SpaceX’s Bandwagon 4 launch, sharing the spotlight with 18 other satellites, including a South Korean reconnaissance satellite and a test platform for the startup Starcloud, which is collaborating with Nvidia to develop an orbital data center. After separating from the Falcon 9 rocket, the half-ton Haven Demo spacecraft successfully stabilized and extended its solar array, showcasing its power-generating capabilities. The deployment was captured in stunning 4K video and shared widely on social media, highlighting the achievement. Max Haot, CEO of Vast, expressed his enthusiasm on X, stating, “What a launch night and team at Vast! And thanks for the ride, SpaceX. Haven Demo’s mission success has turned us into a proven spacecraft company.” He emphasized that their next goal is to establish a commercial space station, a feat that has yet to be accomplished. Vast, supported by cryptocurrency billionaire Jed McCaleb, is among several contenders aiming for a NASA contract to deploy a commercial outpost in low-Earth orbit. What sets Vast apart is its methodical approach, opting for flight demonstrations to validate its private space station technology. Following Haven Demo, the company plans to launch Haven-1, a human-rated habitat module, next year using a Falcon 9 rocket. The primary structure of Haven-1 is already completed, featuring a hatch and a domed window, and has successfully passed pressure and load testing in Mojave, California. The module is currently set for final inspections and integration at Vast’s facility in Long Beach.
