AI voice startup Vapi hits $500M valuation after winning Amazon Ring over 40 rivals

In a significant development for the AI voice technology sector, the startup Vapi has achieved a remarkable valuation of $500 million following its selection by Amazon Ring. This decision was made after Ring assessed over 40 AI voice vendors to manage the surge in customer support calls that peaked during the last holiday season. As it stands, Vapi now handles 100% of Ring’s inbound calls through its innovative platform. Vapi recently completed a $50 million Series B funding round led by Peak XV Partners. This substantial investment was a direct result of the partnership with Amazon Ring, which began in the fourth quarter of last year. At the time, Ring was deliberating whether to enhance its call center capabilities, continue relying on traditional automated systems, or integrate AI agents capable of more naturally engaging with customers. Vapi's CEO, Jordan Dearsley, noted that Ring opted for Vapi due to the control it provided over the AI agents' interactions with customers. Jason Mitura, Amazon Ring’s vice president of software development, confirmed that customer satisfaction ratings improved significantly after implementing Vapi’s technology. He emphasized that the ability for Ring’s teams to adjust the AI experience without needing constant engineering support contributed to these positive outcomes. Vapi's origins trace back to an AI therapist concept Dearsley developed in 2023, which aimed to facilitate engaging conversations during his walks. Together with his University of Waterloo classmate Nikhil Gupta, they pivoted from that initial idea after discovering a growing demand for the voice infrastructure beneath the application. Their public launch occurred in 2024, and since then, Vapi has been a game-changer in the voice agent arena, offering tools for various functions including customer support, appointment scheduling, and sales outreach. With over 1 billion calls processed through its platform, Vapi is witnessing rapid growth as more enterprises shift towards AI-driven customer interactions. Currently, the startup handles between 1 million and 5 million calls daily, primarily from enterprise clients such as Kavak, Instawork, New York Life, UnityAI, Cherry, and Intuit. Vapi also boasts a self-service developer platform that has attracted over 1 million developers, showcasing its widespread appeal. The recent Series B funding round also saw participation from notable investors including Microsoft’s M12, Kleiner Perkins, and Bessemer Venture Partners, bringing Vapi’s total funding to $72 million. With a healthy annual recurring revenue run rate in the eight figures, Vapi is positioned to expand its engineering and market teams further. As the demand for AI voice solutions escalates, Vapi stands out by concentrating on the infrastructure and orchestration layers of voice technology, allowing enterprises to maintain control over the reliability and compliance of AI interactions. Dearsley concluded with a vision of transforming AI models into reliable tools that can provide significant value to businesses and consumers alike.
