NASA approved a safety waiver for this week’s reentry of Van Allen Probe

A NASA satellite, which has spent over ten years exploring the Van Allen radiation belts that envelop our planet, is on the verge of reentering the Earth's atmosphere. While the majority of this 1,323-pound (600-kilogram) spacecraft is expected to disintegrate upon reentry, a small portion may survive the descent and reach the Earth's surface. Uncontrolled reentries of satellites of similar mass occur frequently, with several instances reported each month. However, this specific event stands out due to its heightened risk to the public, surpassing the safety thresholds typically maintained by the US government. Presently, the likelihood of causing harm is estimated at about 1 in 4,200, which is higher than the accepted standard of 1 in 10,000 for such incidents. A spokesperson from NASA explained, "Due to late-stage design changes, the potential risk of uncontrolled reentry increased. After weighing the scientific advantages of the mission against the low probability of harm, NASA decided to issue a waiver to comply with US Government Orbital Debris Mitigation Standard Practices. In line with national policy, we informed the US Department of State about this exception." The satellite, known as Van Allen Probe A, was launched in 2012 as part of a dual-satellite mission aimed at investigating Earth’s radiation belts, which consist of charged particles held captive by the planet's magnetic field. These belts play a crucial role in shielding Earth from cosmic radiation and solar storms. Predicting when satellites will reenter the atmosphere can be challenging due to the fluctuating density of the upper atmosphere. The latest forecast from the US Space Force indicates that Van Allen Probe A is set to reenter early this week, with the reentry window estimated to be between late Monday and late Wednesday.
