Valve kills its retail gift card program due to scammers

In a significant shift, Valve has announced the discontinuation of its retail Steam gift card program, attributing the decision to ongoing issues with scammers exploiting this payment method. For many gamers, these physical gift cards have been a convenient way to purchase games at traditional stores since their introduction in 2012. The company revealed this change in a recent update to its Steam support page, which highlighted the persistent challenges they have faced with fraudulent activities. Scammers have manipulated the system by instructing victims to buy gift cards, then share the card details and security PINs, allowing them to resell this information at discounted rates on grey market platforms—creating a virtually untraceable payment method. Despite implementing various measures to combat this issue, including setting limits on gift card redemption and adding warnings on the cards themselves, Valve acknowledged that scammers have evolved their tactics. As a result, the company concluded that it could no longer effectively protect its users from these scams. This difficult decision means that while current physical gift cards can still be redeemed, no new retail cards will be produced. Existing stocks are expected to be depleted by the end of 2026, marking the end of an era for Steam's gift card offerings at retail locations. Customers are encouraged to utilize any remaining gift cards they may have before the phase-out is complete.
