Valla raises $2.7M to make legal recourse more accessible to employees

Danae Shell grew increasingly frustrated by the repetitive narratives she encountered regarding workplace issues. "Employees faced problems at work, but the outcome was always the same: they left without pursuing action due to the complexity and high costs involved," she shared with TechCrunch. This widespread sentiment led her to establish Valla in 2022, a platform dedicated to simplifying legal access for employees. Valla specializes in employment law and claims to have empowered over 12,000 workers to file complaints and achieve settlements since its inception. "Our premise was simple: if we can enable people to file tax returns via mobile, we can create a solution to help them navigate legal challenges," Shell explained. The Valla platform assists users in gathering evidence, generating necessary documents, and connecting with legal experts who provide guidance throughout the legal process. For instance, users can track ongoing workplace issues, draft Tribunal claims, and obtain coaching packages to prepare for hearings. Embracing modern technology, Valla integrates AI to enhance its services. "Our GenAI engine functions like a legal assistant, managing case briefings, taking notes during calls, and handling administrative tasks as cases advance," Shell noted. The company's innovative approach has attracted considerable investor interest, culminating in a recent seed round of £2 million (approximately $2.7 million) led by Ada Ventures, with participation from Active Partners, Portfolio Ventures, and previous backers Techstart and Resolution Foundation. Shell indicated that Valla began utilizing generative AI in early 2023, a decision that, combined with the platform's early success, impressed investors. The newly acquired funds will be directed toward marketing efforts, establishing collaborations with worker unions and insurers, and expanding AI functionalities within the platform. Following its focus on employment law, Shell expressed ambitions to branch into small claims and tenancy disputes, with plans to explore opportunities in the U.S. and Europe.
