Signs of hope: As measles spread, New Mexico vaccinations surged 55%

In January 2025, a measles outbreak emerged on the outskirts of Texas, quickly spreading to New Mexico and other neighboring states. This outbreak has become the most significant in the United States since 2000, the year when measles was officially declared eliminated in the country. Texas recorded its largest outbreak since 1992, while New Mexico experienced its first measles case since 1996. As the outbreak unfolded, the response in both states varied dramatically. Texas announced the conclusion of its outbreak on August 18, reporting a total of 762 cases. Conversely, New Mexico declared its outbreak over on September 26, with a significantly lower count of just 99 cases. A recent study highlighted a crucial factor in this disparity: the rapid spread of the measles virus in New Mexico led to a substantial increase in vaccination rates among both children and adults. From January to September 2025, the administration of measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccines surged by an impressive 55 percent compared to the same timeframe in 2024. The findings, published in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, revealed further details of this vaccination boost. Overall, the number of MMR doses administered to children under 18 rose by 18 percent, increasing from 27,988 in 2024 to 32,890 in 2025. Notably, adult vaccinations skyrocketed by an astonishing 291 percent, from 5,748 doses in 2024 to 22,500 in 2025. Health officials observed a direct correlation between the outbreak declaration and the uptick in vaccinations. Within just two weeks of the outbreak being announced, the number of vaccine doses administered across all regions of New Mexico began to surpass the figures from the previous year. In certain areas, officials noted weekly vaccination increases of as much as 78 to 83 percent following the identification of the first measles cases, showcasing a proactive community response to the health crisis.
