Utah's governor just tightened the rules for Kevin O'Leary's giant AI data center

The governor of Utah is setting stricter regulations for AI data center projects in response to community backlash. Following a controversial initiative backed by 'Shark Tank' investor Kevin O'Leary, Governor Spencer Cox has introduced new guidelines aimed at ensuring that developments align with the state's environmental and social values. In an executive order issued on Friday, Cox emphasized the importance of safeguarding water resources, air quality, utility rates, wildlife, and overall quality of life for Utah residents. He stated in a post on social media that, 'Utahns deserve confidence that these essential aspects of our environment will be protected. This framework will help align data center development with Utah's long-term interests.' The newly established framework outlines eight key principles that tackle various concerns, including the preservation of the Great Salt Lake and strategies to mitigate adverse effects on local wildlife. Additionally, the guidelines advocate for fair utility rates, promote human-led AI development, and ensure that residents have substantial opportunities for public input. This order comes as tensions rise in Box Elder County, where plans for the Stratos Project—a massive 40,000-acre data center complex—have sparked significant opposition from local residents. Despite the project being touted as a job creator and a catalyst for economic growth, many community members are worried about its potential environmental impact, including noise pollution, air quality issues, increased traffic, and changes to their quality of life. O'Leary has defended the Stratos Project, suggesting that some of the dissent may be fueled by external influences, including claims of 'professional protesters' and foreign funding. Meanwhile, more than 2,000 questions and concerns have been raised by residents, showcasing a mix of both support and opposition. In May, Governor Cox noted that developers agreed to a phased approach for the Stratos Project, requiring them to seek new permits for each stage of development. As data center initiatives gain political traction ahead of the upcoming midterm elections, communities nationwide are mobilizing against such projects, with some successfully halting developments in other states. With these new regulations, Utah aims to ensure that any future data center projects will prioritize community interests and environmental stewardship.
