Utah's governor has made it harder for Kevin O'Leary to build his data center

Utah's Governor Spencer J. Cox is responding to community concerns regarding a proposed data center backed by "Shark Tank" investor Kevin O'Leary. In light of feedback from residents about the project's potential effects on energy usage and air quality, Cox announced new regulatory measures aimed at ensuring transparency and accountability. In a detailed post on X, Cox acknowledged the valid worries expressed by local residents and leaders. He emphasized the importance of clear standards as the state navigates the implications of the data center's development. To address these concerns, the governor outlined a comprehensive approach that includes requiring new approvals for each phase of the project, with the initial phase capped at 1.5 gigawatts. This directive means that the developers will need to secure fresh approvals as they advance their expansion plans. Additionally, Cox instructed the state's environmental agency to thoroughly review all permits linked to air quality, while also directing the Department of Natural Resources to safeguard water resources and ensure the use of eco-friendly cooling systems. The Stratos Project, planned for a 40,000-acre site, has triggered significant debate among residents, who have voiced fears about increased utility costs, noise pollution, and overall impacts on their quality of life. Despite advancements in sustainable practices, data centers are known to consume vast amounts of water daily, raising further concerns. While data centers are crucial for supporting the growth of AI and tech companies, many communities remain hesitant about such developments occurring nearby. In response to the backlash, O'Leary suggested that opposition might stem from organized protests and remarked on the role of AI-generated discussions in shaping public perception. He also urged the public to recognize the importance of sustainability and the rights of local communities in relation to such projects.
