Musicboard, a popular music discovery and recommendation app, is facing significant challenges, leaving its users increasingly concerned. Reports indicate that the app has experienced multiple outages, its website has gone offline, and the Android version has vanished from the Play Store. This has alarmed its relatively small but dedicated user community, which has seen approximately 462,000 downloads to date, according to Appfigures. In the absence of clear communication from the developers, users have turned to platforms like Reddit to suggest alternatives and provide mutual support while awaiting updates. Typically, when an app with an active user base encounters issues, its operators will communicate with their audience. However, Musicboard users have reported a lack of responses, prompting some to contact the media in hopes of obtaining information, particularly regarding data export options. In response to the growing concern, a grassroots campaign called “Help Save Musicboard” has emerged, spearheaded by a user known as Lavarini and supported by volunteers. TechCrunch reached out to Musicboard for clarity on the situation. The team provided a brief statement claiming that the app had not shut down, attributing the outages to “temporary downtime” that they stated had been resolved. The message, sent from the official Musicboard email and signed simply as “Musicboard,” assured users that the app would not cease operations without proper notice. Despite this assurance, follow-up inquiries remained unanswered. Founders Johannes Vermandois and Erik Heimer, who have previously worked on other projects, are currently navigating challenges with their AI app, Frank AI, which was in the process of being acquired by Freedom Holdings, Inc. However, that potential acquisition fell through in September 2024. Vermandois and Heimer also manage another app, Helm, which serves as an AI therapist. Lavarini expressed commitment to the initiative, stating that the campaign aims to enhance awareness and foster discussions about Musicboard's long-term viability and its user community. The efforts to keep the app alive and thriving will continue, reflecting the dedication of its users to maintain this indie platform.
