This week, Instagram Threads introduced its highly anticipated direct messaging feature, but the rollout has not been met with universal excitement. Many users, particularly women, have voiced their concerns about potential harassment and the lack of an option to completely disable direct messages. While platforms like X, Bluesky, and Mastodon have similar messaging capabilities, Threads users previously enjoyed an environment free from such direct communication. One user lamented, "I don’t want to receive DMs. How do I shut this thing off? I ask on behalf of all women." Another user echoed similar sentiments, stating, "Great. More ways for women to get harassed online," while a third chimed in with, "Congrats on adding a feature only stalkers were interested in." In response to the announcement made by Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram, many users have expressed their disapproval. Numerous comments highlighted a poll indicating that a significant majority preferred to forgo the DM feature altogether. Users are now questioning whether it’s possible to disable direct messages—unfortunately, there is currently no option to do so. Concerns extend beyond harassment, with users also anxious about their inboxes potentially becoming inundated with spam and bot messages. The current setup requires users to follow each other for direct messaging to be possible. If a user feels uncomfortable, they can unfollow, which will prevent further messages from that account. For those seeking a more definitive solution, blocking the user is also an option, which extends to their Instagram account as well. It's important to note that those voicing their dissatisfaction may be more vocal than those who appreciate the new feature, similar to how customers often leave negative reviews more frequently than positive ones. The introduction of new functionalities in an established social media environment can lead to disruption, particularly when users feel they lack control over their experience. Meta's approach of linking DMs to follower status was intended to enhance user choice, but it seems to have overlooked the complexities of interactions on a public platform like Threads, where users might wish to engage with unfamiliar voices while maintaining boundaries in their private communications.
