The recent launch of OpenAI's GPT-5 model has sparked significant backlash among ChatGPT users following a live-streamed event revealing the new features. Promising enhancements in coding, reasoning, accuracy, writing, and multi-modal capabilities, GPT-5 also boasts a reduced tendency to generate inaccuracies. However, many loyal users expressed disappointment, particularly regarding the discontinuation of several older models, including GPT-4o, GPT-4.1, and others. Social media platforms have been flooded with complaints from users who feel that the new model does not meet their expectations. Many have pointed out that GPT-5 appears to lack the engaging personality that characterized previous versions, especially GPT-4o. Users have reported receiving shorter responses that lack the depth and emotional resonance they enjoyed with earlier models. A wave of dissatisfaction has led some subscribers to threaten cancellation of their ChatGPT accounts unless OpenAI reinstates the older models. In discussions on the ChatGPT subreddit, several users lamented the loss of GPT-4o, which they regarded as more than just a tool; it was a companion that provided creative inspiration and support. One user expressed, "For me, this model wasn’t just ‘better performance’ or ‘nicer replies.’ It had a voice, a rhythm, and a spark I haven’t been able to find in any other model." Concerns over transparency and honesty have also been raised, particularly regarding the performance metrics presented during the GPT-5 announcement, which some users labeled as misleading. In response to the outcry, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman took to Reddit and X to address user concerns, promising to double the message limits for ChatGPT Plus users and extend the availability of GPT-4o for a limited time. He acknowledged technical issues that may have affected users' experiences with the new model and vowed to improve transparency in model performance. Despite these assurances, the sentiment among many longtime users remains skeptical as they navigate the changes brought by the latest iteration of OpenAI's technology.
