A wave of American tech and AI firms is rapidly establishing a stronger presence in London, drawn by the city's rich talent pool and the ongoing quest to innovate and commercialize cutting-edge technologies. Recently, both Anthropic and OpenAI disclosed their plans to occupy larger office spaces in the UK capital, signaling a robust commitment to growth. In addition to these industry giants, Cursor, a coding platform, revealed intentions to set up its London headquarters this summer. Google is also making headlines with its plans to relocate teams into a new 11-story office building in King's Cross in the near future. Other notable U.S. software companies, including Databricks and Salesforce, are also increasing their workforce or expanding their facilities in the area. The expansion trend is not limited to tech firms alone. Electric vehicle manufacturer Rivian and data analytics company Palantir have announced plans for growth in London by the latter half of 2025. "Talent is the key factor driving this expansion," stated Mike Wiseman, head of campuses at British Land, in a conversation with CNBC. He emphasized that London boasts a well-established technology ecosystem that can support international business scaling. After a lull following the pandemic, demand from tech companies in London is surging once again, fueled by a new wave of startups that have emerged in recent years. The global AI sector is experiencing unprecedented growth, with startups raising a staggering $392.1 billion so far this year, as reported by Dealroom. This figure already surpasses the previous record year of 2025, which saw $215.9 billion in funding. Frederic Groussolles, a partner at Heidrick & Struggles, noted that London stands out as one of the most substantial sources of elite AI talent outside of the United States. He attributes this to a decade of investment, including initiatives by DeepMind, major research institutions, and leading universities that have cultivated a skilled workforce in AI research, engineering, and leadership. DeepMind, founded in London and acquired by Google in 2014, remains a significant player in the AI space, contributing to groundbreaking developments such as the Gemini models. When Anthropic announced its London expansion, which will accommodate 800 employees—quadrupling its current local workforce—Pip White, head of EMEA North, highlighted the city’s exceptional AI talent pool as a major factor in the decision. Anthropic's new office will be situated in the Knowledge Quarter, a hub for AI innovation that also hosts companies like OpenAI and Google DeepMind. Furthermore, London’s status as a global financial center offers these tech firms immediate access to venture capital, growth equity, and corporate development resources. Despite the influx of well-funded U.S. companies, local startups are feeling the pressure, as they face stiff competition for top talent. Dan Hyde, founder of executive search firm Erevena, remarked that these companies can offer attractive compensation packages and fulfilling work opportunities, making them highly desirable employers. Space constraints pose a significant challenge for London's tech sector. Wiseman pointed out that the scarcity of quality office space is a pressing concern, with a projected shortfall of 10.4 million square feet of new or renovated space by 2030. This shortage is exacerbated by the fierce competition between hypergrowth AI companies and traditional finance and professional services firms for prime office locations. Moreover, there are growing concerns about whether the existing infrastructure can keep pace with the rapid growth of the tech sector. Ziv Reichert, a partner at LocalGlobe, emphasized the need for ongoing investment in infrastructure that supports talent, computing power, housing, and transportation. He cautioned that while talent has attracted major labs to London, retaining them hinges on the UK’s ability to build suitable infrastructure to support their needs.
