The Biden administration has announced a significant shift in the governance of TikTok, granting American firms control over the algorithm that dictates the app's content feed. This initiative aims to enhance oversight and mitigate potential Chinese influence on the platform. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt revealed that Oracle will oversee TikTok's data management and security within the United States. Furthermore, six out of seven positions on the newly established governing board will be filled by American representatives, ensuring that U.S. interests are prioritized. Leavitt emphasized the importance of American control over the algorithm, stating, "The algorithm will also be controlled by America as well," as a measure to safeguard against foreign manipulation. This decision follows extensive discussions regarding TikTok's future, as its Chinese parent company, ByteDance, faces increasing pressure from U.S. lawmakers to divest its American operations. Despite previous legislative efforts to ban TikTok starting in January, President Trump has granted multiple extensions to facilitate ongoing negotiations. After a recent conversation with Chinese President Xi Jinping, Trump expressed confidence in the involvement of American investors, referring to them as "great American patriots" committed to ensuring the app's integrity. However, Beijing has yet to confirm any agreement regarding the sale of a controlling stake in TikTok. A statement post-call did not address the algorithm control, which remains a critical issue in the discussions. U.S. officials have voiced concerns about TikTok's data practices and the potential for the app to subtly sway American users, particularly in matters of news and political dialogue. Leavitt stated the administration is "100 percent confident that a deal is done" and hinted that the final agreement may be finalized soon. She underscored the administration's commitment to user privacy while recognizing TikTok's role as an essential component of the democratic process.
