US threatens crackdown on EU firms as clash over tech regulations intensifies

Tensions between the United States and the European Union are escalating, as the US government has threatened to impose restrictions on several major EU-based service providers. This warning comes in response to growing frustrations over EU tech regulations that have drawn criticism from the Trump administration. On Tuesday, the Office of the US Trade Representative (USTR) took to social media platform X to name nine companies, including Spotify, Accenture, Amadeus, Mistral, Publicis, and DHL, as part of this emerging conflict. The USTR accused the EU and certain member states of engaging in discriminatory practices, including lawsuits, taxes, fines, and directives that they say unfairly target US service providers. This clash follows the notable case of Elon Musk's X, which became the first tech company to incur a fine under the EU's stringent Digital Services Act. The $140 million penalty has sparked outrage within the Trump administration, with Vice President JD Vance labeling it as an act of censorship against X and its user base. In response to the USTR's statements, a spokesperson from the European Commission (EC) reaffirmed the EU's commitment to defending its regulatory framework. They emphasized that the EU remains an open market where global companies can operate successfully and profitably. The spokesperson noted that EU regulations are designed to apply equally and fairly to all businesses within the region, aiming to create a safe and equitable environment for both residents and companies. The USTR account further highlighted that US firms contribute significantly to the EU economy, providing free services to citizens and enterprise solutions to businesses. They also noted the substantial investment of over $100 billion from US companies into the European market, underscoring the importance of these relationships amidst rising regulatory tensions.
