U.S. halts UK tech trade deal negotiations, FT reports

The United States has decided to put a stop to negotiations regarding a technology trade agreement with the United Kingdom, as reported by the Financial Times. This development comes after U.S. officials expressed frustration over the slow pace of discussions. Initially unveiled in September during President Donald Trump's visit to the U.K., the proposed 'technology prosperity deal' aims to foster collaboration between the two nations in various advanced technology sectors, including artificial intelligence, nuclear fusion, and quantum computing. At that time, Trump emphasized that the agreement would position both countries at the forefront of the next significant technological advancement. U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer referred to the deal as a monumental shift in U.S.-U.K. relations, promising economic growth, enhanced security, and new opportunities across the nation. However, the latest reports indicate that the U.S. suspended talks last week, according to unnamed sources within the British government. In response to inquiries about the negotiations, a spokesperson for the U.K. government reassured that the longstanding special relationship with the U.S. remains intact. They expressed commitment to ensuring the Tech Prosperity Deal brings tangible benefits to citizens in both countries. The agreement was expected to initiate AI-driven research initiatives targeting critical areas, including the creation of models and datasets for biotechnology, precision medicine for cancer and other complex diseases, and advancements in fusion energy. This pause in negotiations follows the U.K.'s recent signing of agreements worth £31 billion ($41 billion) with several major U.S. tech companies, such as Microsoft, Nvidia, Google, OpenAI, and CoreWeave, aimed at strengthening the U.K.'s AI infrastructure. Notably, the U.S. remains the U.K.'s largest trading partner. The U.S. Department of Commerce has yet to provide a comment on this matter.
