Lawmakers probe growing use of Chinese AI models in U.S. companies

U.S. lawmakers are increasingly scrutinizing the adoption of Chinese artificial intelligence models by domestic companies amid escalating geopolitical tensions. Andrew Garbarino, chairman of the House Committee on Homeland Security, voiced his apprehension about a Chinese open-weight model that reportedly matches U.S. models in specific cybersecurity tasks, labeling the development as alarming. Despite some government agencies banning certain Chinese AI models, U.S. companies continue to utilize them. Prominent tech leaders, including those from Coinbase and AI startup Lindy, have praised the cost-effectiveness of Chinese AI models. For instance, Cursor, which is set to be acquired by SpaceX for $60 billion, developed its Composer 2 model using Kimi, a Chinese AI product. Airbnb clarified that while it primarily operates on U.S.-origin AI models, it does use a limited number of open-source models from China, ensuring data protection through U.S.-based service providers. The ongoing investigation not only seeks to understand the extent of Chinese AI adoption but also questions whether the U.S. has a robust strategy in place to counteract this trend. Lawmakers are advocating for a comprehensive approach that ensures American AI models are viable alternatives to their Chinese counterparts. Concerns have been raised that if U.S. companies default to using Chinese models, the global digital economy may become heavily influenced by embedded censorship and security risks. Strategies under consideration may include federal procurement bans that prevent government agencies from using Chinese AI, although experts caution that banning open-source models may conflict with First Amendment rights.
