In a recent bulletin, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security has raised alarms regarding potential cyberattacks orchestrated by Iranian state-sponsored hackers against American networks. This warning comes in light of escalating tensions between the U.S. and Iran, particularly amidst the ongoing conflict involving Israel. The National Terrorism Advisory System's bulletin indicates that low-level cyberattacks are anticipated, noting that both hacktivists and government-affiliated hackers frequently exploit vulnerabilities in inadequately secured U.S. networks and internet-connected devices to instigate chaos. This advisory follows a wave of airstrikes conducted by the U.S. and Israel targeting Iran’s nuclear initiatives, coinciding with aggressive cyber operations by a pro-Israel hacking group known as Predatory Sparrow. This group reportedly managed to incapacitate one of Iran’s leading banks and wipe out substantial cryptocurrency assets held by the nation’s largest crypto exchange. In response to the initial airstrikes, Iranian authorities confirmed the shutdown of the nation’s internet as a defensive measure against impending cyber threats. Iran has a well-documented history of offensive cyber operations, which include extensive espionage campaigns aimed at senior U.S. officials and disruptive attacks focused on data theft from major businesses and tech companies, often leveraging known security flaws or compromised credentials.
