US government allows Anthropic limited release of AI model that sparked cybersecurity concerns

The US government has granted Anthropic permission to release its advanced Mythos AI model to a select group of companies and organizations. This decision comes after a revision of license requirements, following an export ban imposed earlier this month due to national security concerns. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick communicated in a recent letter to Anthropic that the company has made significant strides in addressing the risks linked to their Covered Models. As a result, he has determined that adequate safeguards are now in place, allowing trusted partners to access the Claude Mythos 5 Model. However, the approval does not extend to Anthropic's Fable, a less powerful variant of Mythos. Anthropic issued a statement indicating that they had received confirmation from the government that Mythos 5, their most robust cybersecurity model, could be redeployed to a limited group of cyber defenders and infrastructure service providers. The company expressed their commitment to quickly provision the approved providers and restore their access to Mythos 5. Earlier in the month, Anthropic had to disable customer access to both Mythos and Fable in compliance with the government's order, which suspended all use by foreign nationals, including Anthropic staff. This export ban and the subsequent negotiations highlighted the chaotic regulatory landscape surrounding artificial intelligence, especially as the technology evolves rapidly and the US aims to maintain its competitive edge against countries like China. The regulatory approach to AI has been inconsistent, and Anthropic finds itself navigating a complex relationship with the federal government. Earlier this year, the administration classified Anthropic as a 'supply chain risk,' effectively placing it on a blacklist due to disputes over potential military applications of its products. In response, Anthropic initiated legal action against this designation and has reportedly achieved some initial success in the ongoing lawsuit.
