US government launches ‘Tech Force’ to hire AI talent

In a significant move, the US government is rolling out a new program aimed at enhancing technology and artificial intelligence expertise within the public sector. This initiative, called the "US Tech Force," is part of a broader strategy to modernize governmental operations and maintain a competitive edge in the global technology landscape. Scott Kupor, director of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM), which is leading this endeavor, highlighted that the program is designed to fill a pressing gap in technical and early career talent throughout government agencies. As tech firms increasingly compete for AI professionals by offering lucrative salaries and benefits, the US Tech Force aims to attract and develop a new generation of tech-savvy employees. The OPM intends to recruit an initial group of 1,000 early career professionals, including software engineers, data scientists, project managers, and AI specialists, who will serve in various government roles for a two-year term. In addition, the program plans to collaborate with technology companies to encourage early career managers to temporarily step away from their private sector positions to join the Tech Force. Kupor emphasized the unique challenges faced by the federal government, stating, "For those considering a long-term career in technology, there are no greater and more complex issues to address than those present in the federal government." This initiative follows the Trump administration's efforts to harness AI for governmental modernization, including the now-restructured Department of Government Efficiency, which was initiated earlier this year. In July, President Trump also signed an action plan focusing on boosting US AI capabilities while reducing regulatory burdens to enhance national competitiveness. Participants in the Tech Force will engage directly with agency leaders on various projects. OPM will screen and assess applicants before recommending them for interviews with individual agencies. Applications for the program opened on Monday, with hopes to have the first cohort placed in positions by early 2026. Members of the Tech Force are set to work on projects that incorporate advanced AI technologies in defense systems, enhance tax processing at the IRS, and improve intelligence operations at the State Department, among other initiatives. Throughout the program, OPM plans to host sessions featuring executives from leading tech firms, providing mentorship and career guidance. Prominent companies such as Microsoft, Adobe, Amazon, Meta, and xAI have already committed to partnering with the program. The initiative will culminate in a job fair, connecting participants with opportunities in both the public and private sectors. Salaries for these roles are projected to be competitive, ranging from approximately $130,000 to $195,000. Kupor noted, "Given the fierce competition for talent in this field, we aim to offer attractive compensation." He further encouraged potential applicants by assuring them that they will gain invaluable experience tackling complex challenges, with opportunities to return to the private sector equipped with enhanced skills and earning potential.
