Major U.S. banks enjoy a blowout quarter — assuaging trade war concerns

In an exclusive interview with CNBC, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent highlighted China's aggressive pricing strategies in the rare earth market, which he described as characteristic of a 'nonmarket economy.' This situation has prompted the Trump administration to consider implementing industrial policies aimed at establishing price floors across various sectors. These price floors would serve as a minimum threshold for how low suppliers can charge for their products or services, effectively acting as a form of government price control. Meanwhile, major financial institutions such as Bank of America and Morgan Stanley reported outstanding second-quarter earnings, significantly exceeding analysts' expectations. These results contributed to a remarkable performance by other leading U.S. banks, including JPMorgan Chase and Goldman Sachs, fueled by a surge in deal-making and stock market activity. Despite ongoing tensions and rhetoric from President Trump regarding trade with China, investor sentiment remains strong, as indicated by gains in the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite, with the Russell 2000 achieving a new record high. The U.S. Federal Reserve's Beige Book suggests that although businesses are facing increased costs due to tariffs, the overall economy remains resilient. Looking ahead, the performance of major technology firms, including Tesla and Intel, will play a crucial role in determining whether traders continue to push stock prices to new heights amidst these fraught trade relations. Bessent also dismissed the notion that a downturn in the stock market would alter the United States' approach to China. Additionally, he noted that while some companies are absorbing higher import costs to maintain competitiveness, others are passing these costs directly onto consumers. In a related note, President Trump announced that India will cease purchasing Russian oil, as confirmed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during a press briefing. However, the transition to new oil sources will take time. On the stock market front, the robust earnings reports led to gains among major U.S. indices, with most advancing on Wednesday. Asian markets also showed positive momentum, with South Korea's Kospi index reaching a record high. The Russell 2000 is poised for a strong week, indicating potential for continued upward momentum as the year progresses.
