US Army announces contract with Anduril worth up to $20B

In a significant move for defense technology, the U.S. Army has officially entered into a decade-long contract with the innovative startup Anduril, potentially valued at $20 billion. Announced late Friday, the agreement kicks off with an initial five-year base period, with options for an extension that could add another five years. This contract marks a transformative step, as it consolidates what previously involved over 120 separate procurement actions for Anduril's advanced commercial solutions. Gabe Chiulli, the Chief Technology Officer at the Department of Defense's Office of the Chief Information Officer, emphasized the importance of software in modern warfare, stating, "The modern battlefield is increasingly defined by software. To maintain our advantage, we must be able to acquire and deploy software capabilities with speed and efficiency.” Anduril, co-founded by Palmer Luckey—known for his previous venture Oculus, which was sold to Facebook (now Meta)—is recognized for its ambitious goals to modernize military capabilities with autonomous technology, including fighter jets, drones, and submarines. Despite controversies surrounding Luckey's political donations, he and Anduril have gained traction within certain political circles, particularly with the former Trump administration. The company has seen substantial growth, reportedly generating around $2 billion in revenue last year, and is currently in discussions for a new funding round that could elevate its valuation to $60 billion. This announcement occurs amidst a backdrop of tensions between the Department of Defense and AI firm Anthropic, which is suing the Pentagon over its classification as a supply chain threat, alongside OpenAI facing scrutiny after its own military contracts.
