U.S. and Australia sign $3B critical minerals deal

In a landmark agreement signed on Monday, President Donald Trump and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese committed to a significant investment in critical minerals projects, totaling $3 billion over the next six months. This collaboration is part of a larger pipeline valued at $8.5 billion, aimed at bolstering the supply of essential minerals needed for various industries. A key element of this partnership involves the U.S. Department of Defense's investment in a gallium refinery located in Western Australia, which will have the capacity to produce 100 tons of gallium annually. Notably, the United States currently relies entirely on imports for its gallium needs, consuming around 21 tons each year, as reported by the U.S. Geological Survey. This strategic move comes in response to China's recent restrictions on the export of critical minerals, including rare earth elements necessary for electronics and electric motors. Gallium plays a vital role in technology, with applications in microwave circuits and the production of blue and violet LEDs, which are integral to powerful laser systems. In addition to the minerals agreement, Australia has also committed to purchasing $1.2 billion worth of autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) from the defense startup Anduril. The White House has yet to clarify whether this procurement is a new initiative or part of an existing $1.12 billion program that was previously announced in September, under which Anduril is set to deliver a fleet of Ghost Shark AUVs to the Australian Navy.
