In a significant move, the platform known as X, previously Twitter, has revealed plans to phase out the Twitter.com domain on November 10. While the vast majority of users will see no impact from this transition, a select group could find themselves locked out unless they take immediate action. The X Safety account has issued a crucial advisory for those utilizing hardware security keys or passkeys for two-factor authentication (2FA). Users must register their credentials with the X.com domain prior to the deadline to avoid account access issues. Failure to do so means that users will be unable to log into their accounts after November 10. Importantly, the company clarified that this shift is not prompted by security concerns and only affects devices such as Yubikeys and passkeys. As stated in their announcement, security keys currently linked to the twitter.com domain will need to be re-enrolled to the x.com domain. Elon Musk, who acquired the platform in late 2023, has been pushing forward with his long-held vision for the domain. Originally founded by Musk in 1999 as X.com, it later became part of PayPal after a merger with Confinity. Musk regained ownership of the X.com domain from PayPal in 2017, citing its sentimental value. Affected users must follow a simple process to ensure continued access to their accounts. By navigating to the X.com app or website, users should go to Settings, then the privacy menu, and select Security. From there, they can access Account access, proceed to Security, and finally Two-Factor authentication to add or re-enroll their security keys. In the unfortunate event that access to an account is lost, users can regain it by re-registering their security key, opting for a different 2FA method, or disabling two-factor authentication altogether—a method which is generally advised against for enhanced security against cyber threats.
