Ebola outbreak now third largest recorded and “spreading rapidly”

The Ebola outbreak originating from the Ituri province in the Democratic Republic of the Congo is witnessing alarming growth, with reported cases nearing 750 and 177 fatalities, according to the latest briefing from the World Health Organization (WHO). This recent surge positions the outbreak as the third largest in history, despite it being first identified just a week ago on May 15. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus highlighted the rapid spread of the virus, prompting a reassessment of the risk levels. The risk has escalated from 'high' to 'very high' at the national level, while remaining 'high' regionally and 'low' globally. Officials have conceded that a delay in recognizing and responding to the outbreak has allowed it to expand significantly, and they are now in a race against time to control the situation. During the press briefing, WHO representative Dr. Anne Ancia reported that when health officials arrived in the area, the virus had already been circulating unnoticed for weeks. The first suspected case stemmed from a health worker who showed symptoms on April 24 in Bunia, the provincial capital. WHO was only alerted to the potential outbreak on May 5, following a cluster of unexplained illnesses that resulted in the deaths of four health workers. By the time a WHO team reached the region, there were already 80 confirmed cases. Dr. Ancia emphasized the urgency of their efforts, stating, "We are sprinting behind [the virus] to effectively manage this outbreak. As transmission continues, we expect the number of cases to rise until we can implement a comprehensive response." The situation is further complicated by the nature of the Ebola strain involved, the Bundibugyo virus, which lacks established vaccines or treatment options. Consequently, the primary strategies to stem the outbreak include active case identification, isolation of affected individuals, and rigorous contact tracing. Additionally, the virus is spreading in regions marked by armed conflict, high population movement, fragile health systems, and widespread food insecurity, making the response even more challenging.
