Scientists: It’s do or die time for America’s primacy exploring the Solar System

As the deadline approaches for federal funding, 19 vital space missions focused on climate change, solar system exploration, and cosmic mysteries face an uncertain future. With the current budget set to expire at the end of this month, Congress is under pressure to act swiftly to prevent a government shutdown by October 1. If a new budget is approved, it is likely to be in the form of a continuing resolution, which would extend this year’s funding levels into the early weeks or months of the fiscal year 2026. However, the White House has proposed a drastic 25% cut to NASA’s overall budget, with an alarming nearly 50% reduction specifically targeting the Science Mission Directorate. These reductions could jeopardize at least 41 missions, including 19 currently in operation and several others in advanced stages of development. While the president's budget proposal is not the final word, lawmakers in both the House and Senate have been working on their own budget bills over the past few months. Despite various differences in these proposals, they largely dismiss many of the cuts suggested by the previous administration. Nonetheless, this uncertainty continues to fuel concerns among both professionals and enthusiasts in the field of space science. The 19 missions at risk of cancellation have already surpassed their intended operational lifetimes. Yet, they are crucial for gathering unique scientific data that may not be replicated for decades. Among these missions are notable projects such as the Orbiting Carbon Observatory satellites, which track climate change indicators, the Chandra X-ray Observatory, which narrowly escaped budget cuts last year, and two of NASA's three active Mars orbiters, all of which serve essential roles in advancing our understanding of the universe.
