A prominent Senate staff member has urged NASA to fast-track its efforts in developing commercial space stations, emphasizing the need for a seamless transition from the aging International Space Station (ISS) to new alternatives. Maddy Davis, who works on space policy for Senator Ted Cruz of Texas, made these remarks during a virtual meeting with the Texas Space Coalition. Senator Cruz, who chairs the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation, has been vocal about his commitment to maintaining a continuous human presence in low-Earth orbit without any gaps. Davis highlighted that Cruz is particularly invested in ensuring commercial space stations are operational before the planned decommissioning of the ISS in 2030. "He’s very painfully clear," Davis stated, noting that the senator brings up this priority in nearly every conversation. To support this initiative, Davis has been pressing NASA to speed up the Commercial LEO Destinations (CLD) program, which aims to foster the development of private space stations. NASA has previously allocated funds to four companies to conceptualize these stations. As the program prepares to enter its next phase, a competitive process is expected, with larger funding opportunities—potentially amounting to hundreds of millions of dollars—up for grabs. The outcome will likely favor one or two companies that can successfully secure these contracts and leverage both public and private investment for their projects. In a recent briefing, Davis expressed frustration over the delays, stating, "We really needed that request for proposals for CLDs like nine months ago. But here we are still begging for it." The program has faced stagnation over the past year due to leadership changes within NASA. The interim administrator, Sean Duffy, introduced a controversial directive last August that modified the rules for private space stations, seemingly benefiting certain companies. This directive is currently under review by NASA’s new administrator, Jared Isaacman, which may lead to further changes in the program's requirements.
