Upwork, the well-known platform that bridges freelancers with businesses, has made headlines with its recent strategic acquisitions aimed at establishing a dedicated enterprise division. The San Francisco-based company has officially acquired Bubty, a workforce management solution, and has entered into a definitive agreement to purchase Ascen, a global compliance and employer of record firm. This announcement comes just ahead of Upwork's second-quarter earnings call scheduled for August 6. These acquisitions are a pivotal step for Upwork as they seek to broaden their market presence beyond the realm of independent contractors. By integrating Bubty and Ascen into their existing enterprise operations, Upwork plans to create a distinct entity that can cater to a wider array of corporate staffing needs. Upwork's President and CEO, Hayden Brown, expressed that the timing for this new venture is ideal, as the company’s enterprise clients have shown increasing demand for diverse talent pools. "Many current providers force clients to make trade-offs between flexibility and compliance, or speed and scale. Our new capabilities aim to eliminate those compromises," Brown stated. Currently, Upwork's enterprise segment contributes approximately $100 million to its total annual revenue of $750 million. The decision to establish this segment as a separate entity stems from the unique requirements larger enterprises have regarding compliance and software integration, which differ significantly from the needs of small to mid-sized businesses. The process of selecting Bubty and Ascen was thorough; Upwork evaluated over 100 potential acquisition targets. Brown highlighted the synergy between the two companies, noting that their combined offerings demonstrated remarkable potential in pilot programs. "We recognized the impact of their technology and how seamlessly they integrate with our existing services to create something innovative for the market," he added. Further details about the branding and complete offerings of the new enterprise division are expected to be revealed later this year.
