That spooky sensation likely due to rumbling pipes, not spirits

When you step into a venue famed for its ghostly legends, that eerie feeling might not originate from the supernatural. A recent study published in the journal Frontiers in Behavioral Neuroscience suggests that sensations attributed to spirits could instead be triggered by infrasound from sources such as vibrating pipes, mechanical systems, or even external environmental factors like traffic and wind turbines. Scientists have been investigating rational explanations for supposed hauntings for years. Notably, psychologist Richard Wiseman from the University of Hertfordshire conducted studies in 2003 that delved into the psychological aspects of these so-called ghostly encounters. Participants explored locations like the Hampton Court Palace and the South Bridge Vaults, both notorious for strange occurrences, and reported their experiences based on the atmosphere of these sites. Interestingly, the findings indicated that participants had heightened sensations in areas rumored to be haunted, regardless of their prior knowledge of such stories. The study revealed that these locations often exhibited fluctuations in magnetic fields, humidity, and lighting, hinting that these environmental variations could trigger unusual feelings. Wiseman proposed that stronger magnetic fields might influence brain activity in ways comparable to electrical stimulation of the angular gyrus, which can create the illusion of a presence nearby. In another investigation at Mary King’s Close, another site with a haunted reputation, around 70% of participants described feeling chills, as though being watched or touched, or even hearing unexplained footsteps. Notably, those sensations coincided with lower humidity levels in the areas where they occurred. While these experiences are undoubtedly real, they are likely rooted in environmental stimuli rather than ghostly inhabitants. The anticipation of visiting a haunted place can amplify these feelings, providing a fascinating insight into the interplay between psychology and our surroundings.
