Easter Island, renowned for its iconic moai statues, has captivated researchers and visitors alike for centuries. These monumental figures, carved from volcanic rock approximately 800 years ago, originated from the Rano Raraku quarry. In an effort to deepen our understanding of the moai's creation, archaeologists have developed a detailed interactive 3D model of the quarry site. According to a study published in the journal PLoS ONE, this innovative model reveals that multiple independent groups, likely family clans, were responsible for the construction of the moai, challenging the notion of a centralized management system. Co-author Carl Lipo from Binghamton University emphasized the model's value, stating, "You can see things that you couldn’t actually see on the ground. You can see tops and sides and all kinds of areas that just would never be able to walk to." Lipo, a leading expert on the moai, highlighted the model's capability to document intricate details that have long needed attention. By utilizing this 3D technology, researchers can explore various carving techniques and share their findings in an engaging manner. Previously, Lipo's research confirmed that the statues were transported in a vertical position using a method where workers would 'walk' the moai to their designated locations. His experiments suggested that this could be accomplished with just 18 workers, demonstrating remarkable efficiency. Through the use of ropes, they managed to move a statue 100 meters in only 40 minutes by effectively applying principles of pendulum dynamics to minimize friction. This groundbreaking research not only sheds light on the logistics behind the moai's transport but also indicates a sophisticated understanding of physics by the island's early inhabitants, offering a glimpse into the advanced techniques used in ancient times.
