As we reflect on the gaming landscape, several titles have captured the spotlight, including notable franchises like Civilization 7, Avowed, Doom: The Dark Ages, and Grand Theft Auto 6. While one title has unfortunately been pushed to 2026, the other three have rightfully earned their place on this year's list of top games. Joining these highly awaited sequels are an array of exciting new entries, ranging from blockbuster productions to indie gems that have been in development for years. However, the standout experiences of 2025 are those unexpected gems that emerged seemingly out of nowhere. This includes innovative roguelike puzzle games, a challenging yet quirky mountain walking simulation, an outstanding Geometry Wars clone, and a heartfelt exploration of adolescence conveyed through engaging mini-games. Looking ahead to 2026, the gaming industry is buzzing with ambitious projects, notably the delayed Grand Theft Auto VI. If this year serves as any indication, we can anticipate even more surprise hits that may quickly become fan favorites. Reflecting on my personal journey as a gamer, I've grown to appreciate the comfort of familiar gameplay alongside the thrill of innovation. This is exemplified by Assassin’s Creed Shadows, which, while adhering to a well-established formula, presents it in a polished and engaging manner. Its expansive world, immersive audio-visuals, and adaptability to various playstyles make it a noteworthy title in today's gaming realm.
