The Jeep Recon, an all-electric SUV boasting an impressive estimated range of 250 miles, has finally made its debut, sparking excitement among enthusiasts. This new model is part of Jeep's ambitious strategy announced three years ago, which included the introduction of three electric vehicles (EVs) aimed at capturing a significant share of the electrified SUV market by 2024. The Recon and its sibling, the Wagoneer S, play pivotal roles in the brand's goal, with Jeep aiming for EVs to constitute half of its North American sales and all sales in Europe by 2030. While the Wagoneer S is set to hit the market in early 2025, the Recon's journey has been more complex. Many automakers, including Stellantis, Jeep's parent company, have recently scaled back their EV ambitions due to lower-than-expected demand. In a notable shift, Ram, also under Stellantis, scrapped plans for a battery-electric full-size pickup in favor of enhancing the extended-range Ram 1500 REV. However, despite these challenges, the Jeep Recon has persevered and is on track for production next year at the Toluca Assembly Plant in Mexico, with a starting price of $65,000, excluding a $1,995 destination fee. The Jeep Recon is designed for off-road enthusiasts, featuring a four-wheel-drive system and proudly carrying the “Trail Rated” badge. This designation signifies its capability on rugged terrain, equipped with the brand’s Selec-Terrain traction management system, underbody protection, tow hooks, off-road tires, and e-locker axle technology. This innovative feature allows drivers to electronically lock the differential, ensuring power is distributed to both rear wheels for enhanced off-road performance. Jeep's CEO, Bob Broderdorf, emphasized the brand's commitment to integrating electrification with off-road excellence, stating, “With the Jeep Recon, we’re proving that electrification isn’t just compatible with off-road excellence, it can elevate it.” The company has also confirmed that the Recon will adopt the North American Charging System for certain EVs, although owners will need an adapter to utilize Tesla's extensive supercharging network. Under the hood, the Recon is powered by a 100-kilowatt-hour battery pack, delivering an impressive 650 horsepower and 620 pound-feet of torque. This potent powertrain allows the SUV to accelerate from zero to 60 mph in just 3.6 seconds, a surprising feat for a vehicle of its type. The question remains whether American consumers will embrace this electrified offering, especially considering the starting price of the 2026 Wrangler is around $49,895. However, the Recon’s robust performance, sophisticated interior featuring a 14.5-inch touchscreen, and classic design elements may sway potential buyers.
