Our favorite gear at Sea Otter Classic wasn’t the bikes—it was the accessories

MONTEREY COUNTY, California — Bicycles have evolved significantly, yet their basic design has remained relatively unchanged since the introduction of the safety bicycle in the 1880s. Today’s cyclists would still find a bike from the 1890s quite familiar. However, for cycling enthusiasts, the Sea Otter Classic, the world's largest consumer cycling trade show, is a treasure trove of innovative bikes and creative accessories. Running from April 16 to April 19 at the Laguna Seca Raceway in Fort Ord, just outside Monterey, this event features hundreds of exhibitors showcasing everything from major brands to smaller startups. The cycling landscape has diversified over the past two centuries, with an increasing focus on e-bikes, gravel bikes, and cargo bikes alongside traditional road and mountain bikes. Prominent brands such as Continental, Trek, Specialized, and Abus are present at Sea Otter, underscoring the event's significance in the cycling community. This year, attendees can also enjoy a dedicated "Bikepacking Campout and After Party," which emphasizes the adventurous spirit of the biking culture. Despite the plethora of new products, many offerings may not seem drastically different to the average cyclist. Questions arise: How innovative can a new crankset really be? Is there a significant difference in bag technology from year to year? Are bike locks genuinely improving? After a two-day journey to the festival, our team dedicated a day to exploring the latest accessories—focusing on what’s new and practical rather than the races that were simultaneously taking place.
