When envisioning the ideal all-purpose vehicle for a compact garage, many picture a versatile SUV or crossover, perhaps models like the Toyota RAV4 or BMW X5. These vehicles are designed to tackle winter weather and weekend getaways, offering ample cargo space. However, European drivers might lean towards station wagons, such as the Volvo Cross Country or Audi Allroad. The Subaru Outback has long been a strong contender in this category, but its latest iteration has shifted more towards SUV characteristics. This shift has paved the way for Toyota to introduce the bZ Woodland, which stands out as a superior alternative to the Outback, positioning itself as an exceptional option for the electric era. The bZ Woodland is a lifted electric wagon that stretches 6 inches longer than its non-Woodland counterpart, providing an impressive 33.8 cubic feet (957 liters) of rear cargo space. This represents a 6.1 cubic feet (173 liters) increase in storage with the second row in place, and it feels even more spacious in practical use. With a ground clearance of 8.3 inches (211 mm)—slightly higher than the standard bZ—the Woodland's design enhances its overall usability. Equipped with a standard roof rack and all-season tires, the bZ Woodland is ready for adventure. Buyers have the option to upgrade to all-terrain tires for no extra cost, albeit with a 21-mile (34 km) reduction in range. These all-terrain tires, featured on my test model, prove their worth by performing admirably on sand, dirt, and snow, while remaining relatively quiet on highways. With a real-world range of 260 miles (418 km), the bZ Woodland offers more than enough for daily drives, while the maximum range of 281 miles (452 km) is available for those who primarily drive on paved roads.
